Geographyo
“Geography is a living, breathing subject, constantly adapting itself to change. It is dynamic and relevant. For me geography is a great adventure with a purpose.”
Michael Palin
Intent
Our Geography curriculum intent is for our children to be given learning opportunities which inspire curiosity and fascination in pupils to explore and understand the world in which we live.
We are committed to providing children with opportunities to investigate and make enquiries about our local area, as well as places within the UK, Europe and the continents in the world. We want children to enjoy and love learning about geography, both in and out of the classroom, through the use of fieldwork and educational visits.
Children should be inspired to enquire and develop an interest in their local area. We hope children will be proud of Oldham and develop an understanding of the features in our area e.g. Castleshaw, Dovestones, Alexandra Park and Oldham's transport networks.
Implementation
A comprehensive two-year topic cycle is in place at Woodlands which allows for the cross-curricular teaching of Geographical skills and knowledge linked to a theme or context. Opportunity is provided for skills and fieldwork throughout engaging and inspirational topics.
In KS2, Cycle A and B are constructed to allow for an in depth coverage of both British (Cycle A) and World (Cycle B) geography. Children work in phase teams to develop knowledge of location and place, human and physical geography.
